Farset Flea Market – Saturday 15th September

It is official. Farset Labs now has a licence to run a flea market. This is an ambitious event to see if there is an demand for a makers run flea market. Markets like this are run all over the world as part of  the maker community.

“The Flea at MIT” have one of the biggest flea markets in the America for 2nd hand electronics. We might reach this level one day if there is demand for it!

The event is allow people to sell unwanted stuff that have tucked away for years, giving unwanted stuff a new life and a new home.

Elections 2018

Farset Labs is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, starting with the original three Directors back in late 2011/early 2012. We aim to try and keep the number of directors at five, and given that we’re currently below that magic prime number, it’s time to launch our 2018 Director Elections. Nominations for Directorship will open from the timestamp of this post until midnight on Friday 28th September.

The Directors of Farset Labs are the individuals expected to set the strategic direction of the charity, and have overall responsibility for maintaining the financial and legal health of the company. You will be expected to join the weekly management meetings and contribute in myriad other ways to the day-to-day running of the space; for example, fielding emails, authorising outgoing payments, and meeting with relevant parties, to name but a few.

You also get to steward a charity that does extensive youth outreach, makes opportunities available for the whole community, and hosts events that benefit all areas of the technology sector. We’re always trying to expand the remit of our offerings to serve even more people and it would be ideal for the incoming Director to aid in those efforts.

Nominees must:

  • Nominate themselves.
  • Have been a member for at least three months (not necessarily in one block).
  • Email david@farsetlabs.org.uk (and CC admin@farsetlabs.org.uk) with
    • Their name.
    • Their ‘pitch’ which is 1000 characters maximum. (Suitability for role, experience, intentions etc.)
  • Be aware that, if successful in the elections, they must not have any convictions that would prevent them from being the Director of a limited company (i.e. convictions under the Fraud Act 2006) or any convictions regarding sexual offences against minors (i.e. convictions under the Sexual Offences Act 2003).
  • Be aware that they have legal obligations as a Director of Farset Labs, including their legal liabilities to HMRC etc.
  • Be aware that, if successful, they will be required to provide details including their legal name, sex, date of birth, addresses lived in the last three years, signature and National Insurance Number for the purposes of registration with Companies House.

Voting will open when the nominee profiles (consisting of the nominee’s name and pitch) are posted publicly on Monday 1st October (Conveniently coinciding with the next Town Hall) and will close at midday on Monday 15th October.
Information on how to vote and the procedures surrounding voting, including the case of a draw, will be posted along with the nominee profiles. The results, barring any special circumstances, will be announced as soon as possible after voting closes, likely the following day.

Rule Changes: Clear-Desk, Desk Rental, and Hazardous Chemical Safety Policy Updates

TL;DR: After going through due process, the desk usage policy has been updated to: explicitly state that un-rented desks should be cleared after use; that members have the right to move equipment left on un-rented desks to communal storage areas; which desks are currently rented/hot-desk/communal; and implementing standard COSHH practices. Columba’s Day Celebrations – Sunday, 10th June 2018

An Open Day 12pm – 6pm & A Free Evening 6pm – 9pm

Join us at Farset Labs for the inaugural Columba’s Day – a day of creativity, collaboration, and sharing of art and culture all under the umbrella of open licences from copyright free to Creative Commons (CC-BY-SA 4.0).

There will be a wide variety of activities on offer on the day from family friendly workshops, performances, exhibitions, etc.  We can exclusively reveal we have Andy Luke, Photography from David Kane, Tote Bag Print Workshop, Folkadelic, and Belfast Improv Theatre with more to come!

The mood will be relaxed with focus on collaboration and creativity – don’t let that put you off, there are many ways of getting involved and enjoying the day even if you do not feel you’re ‘creative’.  As befits the ethos of the day, food will be available by way of a potluck and we would welcome your culinary creations.

After the main event, we will finish off with an informal evening (6pm – 9pm) including a screening of a suitable copyright free film.

Creativity Month 2018 – Idea Jam and Bog Standard

As part of the Department of Communities “Creativity Month 2018”, Farset are coordinating two workshop-style events this year, continuing our now 5 year track record of delivering awesome weirdness! Bog Standard and IdeaJam, both kindly supported by the Department of Communities NI

Ideas. We’ve all got ‘em, rattling around in our busy, distracted heads.

On Saturday 31st March, 10am – 10pm, Farset Labs will host IDEA JAM – a chance for creators, designers and developers to clear all distractions and finally sculpt that secret, nebulous idea you’ve been chipping away at for years into that’s ready to pitch and take it to the next level.

You might be harbouring a business, a novel, a video game, a TV pilot, a children’s book or a screenplay… it’s there, hiding behind grocery lists, bank statements and status updates.

It’s time to finally get that idea out of your head and into the world, so you can actually do something real with it.

Artists, developers and other screen industry experts will be on hand to help transfer your concept from brain to pitch, whether it’s a story arc, synopsis, sketch or sizzle reel… and maybe even tell you where to take it next.

Schedule

The schedule is pretty informal, as this is your time for your idea. Meals will be catered through the day, starting with breakfast at 9:30am. Industry mentors with experience of pitching business, film and game concepts will be available from 10:00am to guide you in fleshing out your idea into something that you can pitch and develop.

By 10:00pm your goal is to have your concept realised, and even ready to pitch to others!

Bog Standard – Rethinking the Humble Bathroom

Thus 22nd March, 5:30pm – 10pm

How would you build a better bog? What factors go into improving a service or product?

Design thinking is a buzz phrase that is often thrown around, but what does it really mean? This evening workshop applies design thinking concepts in a concrete manner; exploring the design considerations of the humble bathroom.

Through iterative explorations facilitated by experienced Design Thinking Practitioners, and the use of empathy generating techniques and ideation tools; a mix of attendees from all backgrounds will be encouraged to explore the impact of changing societal, technical and practical needs in a familiar context, all while additional “Chaos Factors” are added over the course of the evening to keep things interesting!
