• We’re happy to announce that we’re playing host to the first Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA) “Policy Hack” day tomorrow morning from 9:30am.

So what is a Policy Hack? It’s a way to bring together policy makers from across the community and voluntary sector, activists, trade unionists, academics, business people, civil servants and members of the public with an interest in the topics to attack issues experienced across a range of themes using a different perspective; the experimental, iterative, and “agile” practices common in the technology and digital creative sectors.

Farset Labs is hosting this programme in our inspirational event space, which should create the atmosphere of open collaboration and knowledge sharing that is often lacking in the rest of the world.

This first event is focused on finding alternative solutions to the current quagmire that is working poverty; where due to a range of factors, individuals and families remain below the poverty line despite being partly or even fully employed.

For more information about NICVA’s programme of events, check out their website. Tomorrow’s event will run from 9:30 to 17:30 and there are just a few spots left, but to express interest in future events, sign up here anyway!

  • After a long hiatus, Farset Labs is back with a new take on our hugely successful  Gathering of Lightning ad-hoc presentation series, once again thanks to support from BCS-Belfast Chapter, with a few changes based on our experiences of running GoL over the past 4 years.

While feedback from the events was unanimously positive, it was felt that GoL was drifting away from it’s original intent to share experience, to educate, and to excite people both in and around the Farset community, with more product and sales pitches percolating up to speak than real knowledge sharing.

In an effort to take things back to their bare bones, we’re stealing some nomenclature from “The Front Page of the Internet”, Reddit.com.

“Explain Like I’m 5”, and it’s abbreviation, “ELi5”, is a slang term used on the Internet in response to an overly complicated answer to a question that requires significant in-advance experience before it can be understood.

Albert Einstein - If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.
Albert Einstein – If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.

“Explain Like I’m 5” is our collaborative speaker series, where local developers, technologists, entrepreneurs, artists, performers, scientists, and business people take a concept that may be highly specific to their area of expertise or work, and break it down to a lay audience from right across the STEAM spectrum with a minimal expectation of prior knowledge.

The target audience is anyone and everyone who loves learning and expanding their horizons. No topic is off limits as long as you are confident that it can be delivered to a lay audience within the constraints of the format.

The event is in two parts; an invited and a free-for-all section, separated by a beer, soft drink, pizza and fresh fruit intermission.

The rules for both groups are the same:

    • Speakers have a maximum of 7 minutes to speak on the subject of their choice, followed by a short open Q&A.
    • No Slides! The use of Non-Projected Visual Aids is heavily encouraged, and projectors may be considered for live demonstrations.
    • Before the event starts and during the break, presenters (invited or unplanned) are asked to put a 3-5 word synopsis of their topic on the blackboard along with their name.
    • The Compère will decide what order presentations will be done, so be nice to him/her!
    • Punishment for rule/time violators is at the discretion of the compère.

If you’ve got something you’d like to share, email events@farsetlabs.org.uk to discuss it with the subject line “ELI5”

  • Sketchy Individuals is a regular open art free-for-all where anyone can sketch, comic, draw, paint, or put pen/pencil/brush to medium with the company of friendly like-minded people. This month’s evening will be running as part of Creativity NI’s Creativity Month.  Some books and materials will be available for anyone new to take advantage of.

Sketchy Individuals runs every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm, and we plan to continue for the foreseeable future.  Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

If you’ve been watching BBC’s Big Painting Challenge, you might be aware of the Little Painting Challenge competition running in parallel – it is open to everyone, with several classes for judging. Your challenge is simply to render a drawing or painting on a postcard-sized medium of your choice. We will have watercolour and card postcards available on Wednesday for you to get started.

  • Update: Due to several factors outside of our control, the directors have decided to postpone this series of elections until later in the year. Thanks!

Farset Labs is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, starting with the original three directors back in late 2011/early 2012. Since then, we aim to try and keep the number of directors at five, so, with the recent departure of Ben Bland for warmer shores (quite literally), it’s time to launch our 2015 Director Elections. Nominations will open from the timestamp of this post until midnight on Wednesday 18th February.

    Nominees must:

    Democracy!

    • Nominate themselves.
    • Have been a member for at least three months (not necessarily in one block).
    • Email david@farsetlabs.org.uk (and CC admin@farsetlabs.org.uk) with
      • Their name.
      • Their ‘pitch’ which is 1000 characters maximum. (Suitability for role, experience, intentions etc.)
    • Be aware that, if successful in the elections, they must not have any convictions that would prevent them from being the Director of a limited company (i.e. convictions under the Fraud Act 2006) or any convictions regarding sexual offences against minors (i.e. convictions under the Sexual Offences Act 2003).
    • Be aware that they have legal obligations as a Director of Farset Labs, including their legal liabilities to HMRC etc.
    • Be aware that, if successful, they will be required to provide details including their legal name, sex, date of birth, addresses lived in the last three years, signature and National Insurance Number for the purposes of registration with Companies House.

Voting will open when the nominee profiles (consisting of the nominee’s name and pitch) are posted publicly on Thursday 19th February and will close at midday on Friday 27th February.

Information on how to vote and the procedures surrounding voting, including the case of a draw, will be posted along with the nominee profiles. The results, barring any special circumstances, will be announced as soon as possible after voting closes, likely the following day.

Any questions can be directed to either david@farsetlabs.org.uk or info@farsetlabs.org.uk. You may also find it useful to review the records of previous elections, available on this blog.

    Good luck!

  • Following our popular astronomy introductions, Farset are happy to host further Belfast-based astronomy for the new-comer. If you have a telescope or binoculars, please do bring them along as this time of year is a great chance to look for objects in the sky. Wear warm clothes, as some of the evening will be spent outside, and hot drinks will be provided.

    Reserve your space via Eventbrite

Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) and Jupiter will be very high in the sky on 7th February. We can’t promise the comet will be more than a fuzzy dot from Belfast but Jupiter is always spectacular, especially when it’s so high in the sky. Lots of other objects to see too.

This event is free for Farset members, £3 donation for non-members.

  • RupertWhitehead312We’re pleased to announce that next Wednesday 21st Jan, we’re hosting Rupert Whitehead, Developer Relations Regional lead at Google, responsible for the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands, for an evening of discussion and collaboration around Google’s ecosystem of products.

Rupert runs the Google Developer Groups, Launchpads, Startup Launch and Google Developer Experts programs in the region. His main focus is to help developers and startups become more successful with Google’s APIs. Prior to Google Rupert worked at Nokia and Symbian. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

With such an amazing speaker coming through the area to engage and grow the Google Developer Network in the province, and thanks to a serendipitous introduction by Grib at our Weavers Court neighbours, Purple Guerrilla, we’re pulling an old trick out of the closet… The concept is simple. Pitch Per Square Foot.

We have approx 30 square meters of blackboard. About 322 sqft in old money. We guestimate that about 250 of that is usable by the average human.

Each attendee has a little over a square foot to describe themselves, make an impact, and leave enough contact details to be got in touch with.

gilchrist2That’s the gimmick. The real draw is the community. As we’ve grown, Farset Labs has developed an amazing community of technologists and business leaders (often in the same body). We want to provide the ultimate relaxed ‘networking’ environment where no one person can bogart the floor with their confidence, or the quiet one gets ignored.Everyone has a square foot*. Going over the lines will be punished by having your square wiped out and given to someone else. Inter-square war will be treated similarly, unless its really funny, in which case, we’ll allow it.

We used this process very successfully over a year and a half ago and I’m glad we can use it again.

After everyone has started to get to know each other, Rupert will be talking about his work at Google, covering a huge range of topics from the evolution of Web APIs and building UX ecosystems through to Wearables and new form factors.

Finally, there’ll be an opportunity for all attendees to discuss their ideas and maybe come up with some brilliant solutions!

  • The wonderful Willis McBriar will be in residence on Wednesday 21st of January for a an evening workshop on video production.

This workshop will be of use to anyone who wants to use video in learning or marketing. In the last few years the way we produce and view video have changed radically. And yet the basic elements of what makes a good video have not changed. Willis and friends will discuss these changes and basics while demonstrating the range of low cost shoot/edit options available to everyone.  Willis has a wealth of knowledge and practical techniques, having worked for the BBC for many years as a broadcast engineer, and with an MSc in e-learning – he now coaches, mentors, teaches (and makes) cheap but tasty video production.

It’s a great opportunity to answer some of your technical production questions, as well as test out new and interesting video ideas.  This workshop is free for Farset members, or £3 (evening rate) for non-members.

    Please register via Eventbrite

  • To our members, the hacker community, and the public, I’d like to wish everyone a happy new year.

There’s been a lot of progress in 2014, with wearables beginning to go mainstream, self-driving cars becoming a legal reality, affordable drone robotics changing perspectives, and finally realising the promises of cybernetics. Here’s how Farset has changed in the past year.

    Membership & Administration

Pricing for membership has been simplified, with a month’s membership now costing just £25. (£15 for active students and starving hackers) For those unable to access the space frequently enough to justify a month’s membership, we offer £5 day passes and £3 entry to evening events.

We are also pleased to announce, much to the benefit of our coworkers, the office add-on package, giving members reserved desks, personal desk phone access, and preferential web / server hosting (more on that later). Details can be found on our website.

We also can finally provide each member with a membership card! These are currently being designed, and all existing members will be contacted in the near future when these are ready.

In addition to our membership changes, we’ve changed how the space is run too. In addition to our directors, we now have non-executive managers (NEMs) whom are now the point of contact for different areas of the space. If you’ve any general questions email nems@services.farsetlabs.org.uk, otherwise you can contact individual NEMs from our contact page.

    Events & Pricing

We have simplified how we categorize events. There are now three types of events that are hosted at Farset Labs.

    Farset organised events

Farset runs some of it’s own events (such as Coderdojo, Flacknite, etc.) Events are free for members, and non-members are subject to our daily-fee. Some events are free to the public, which will be noted on the Eventbrite page or calendar information.

    Member run events

Any Farset member is free to host events (such as Astronomy night, BelfastJS, etc.) There is no hosting fee for members, and events are always open to members (for free). A member may open up the event to the public, subject to our daily fee (£5 for day events, £3 for evenings).

    3rd party events

We host many outsider events, such as the Irish Pinball League, Global Game Jam, or corporate events. These events are not controlled by Farset Labs, and come with their own terms and pricing. As before, any event outside of our default access terms will be noted on our calendar.

You can find out all information about any upcoming events on our website. If you wish to run an event at Farset, member or non-member, please get in touch at events@farsetlabs.org.uk.

    Facilities

To compliment the new desks in the coworking space, we’ve had a paint job! There are now 8 full sized desks, 6 with power and network access, and we now have 3 iMacs free for use by all members. Printing facilities are now available to all in the space, and can be accessed via Google Cloud Print by a QR code on each printer.

Our event space has had a media overhaul, with Chromecast, PS3, and media PC provided for entertainment. With an auto-switching projector and sound system, this goes against our traditional rule of ‘complicated as possible’. We apologise for this.

The project space has survived a massive clearout, with more storage space, improved lighting, and more tools than ever before. Every member has access to free box storage, and all equipment is being inventoried in our new system.

    Hosting and infrastructure

We now have the facility to provide member server hosting onsite, with a new 42U server rack located in the project space! We’re also providing on-site virtual server hosting, with one free VM available for every member. All of our services now come with external web access, so hosting your prototype website or showing off your projects is now something we can finally offer.

In addition to hosting, we now have a dedicated 100Mbit internet link, distributed WiFi throughout the space, and IPv6 access.

We also say goodbye to Evorack, but hello to ABPNI Computer Solutions, Evorack’s parent company. ABPNI will continue to provide some of our web infrastructure, but in light of our own VPS offering, Evorack’s free virtual servers for members are no longer offered.

    Security and Privacy

At Farset there are mixed opinions on the balance of security vs privacy – in order to best suit everyone a general survey is going out to all members soon to better understand what way we should deal with these issues. To clarify some of our current data recording policies:

    • Member data held by Farset consists of full name, email, and payment information
    • We do not perform any logging of internet access apart from our bandwidth graphs
    • CCTV retention has increased from 2 weeks to 1 year as of 12th Oct 2014

Door access to the space has been a calamity over the years, but we are heading to a solution! Soon, you’ll be able to use your membership card to access the space, with guests and external event organisers being given temporary pin codes to access the space. This is an ongoing project, and you can get involved in the discussion over on Discourse.

We’re also in the process of updating all of our core services to use TLS. Discourse and our assets server are already done, but there’s still plenty left to do. If you have any concerns about our online security, please, get in touch.

If you have any questions about anything above, you can contact your friendly NEMs at nems@services.farsetlabs.org.uk. It’s amazing what can happen in a year. Here’s to the next.

  • The following is a combined position paper and call-to-action for a project that many of us have been working on behind the scenes for a long time now, especially Andrew Mulholland who’s taken over the operation of the Raspberry Jam programme.

Andrew and I collaborated on this document to put forward our plans for a school outreach programme built on the experience we’ve gained from running the Jam programme in Belfast for the past two years, including a collaboration between Farset Labs, Digital Circle and W5 that brought teachers together from across the province to share best practice for ICT education, as well as receiving our ‘wisdom’ from running CoderDojo and Jam-like programmes. This programme was assessed DCAL and was very well received but due to personnel changes in some relevant organisations, has not been directly carried on as a full pilot programme.

We hope to change that, and thanks in part to Andrew’s recent successes at the TalkTalk Digital Hero awards, as well as working over the summer with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, we’ve secured match funding up to £4,000 to support the proposed programme.

But we need your help to drum up the rest of our estimated £8,000 programme costs, and hopefully this document will help. Have a read at our thoughts, and Andrew and I are more than happy to answer any questions, concerns or ideas about the proposed programme.

    EDIT:

We’re happy to announce that The CultureTech Festival have pledged £1,000 towards this programme, as well as inviting us to participate in three events in the North West.

Global Game Jam at Farset is back once more for 2015, in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen.  The Game Jam will run from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th January, and is a chance to meet some great people and develop a fun game with a theme. The theme will be announced on the Friday night; there will be plenty of people there to team up with to create something interesting and, most importantly, to have fun!

Last Years Jam went very well, with all teams submitting something at the end of the weekend

    How do I enter?
Register on the Global Game Jam site to participate, and reserve your seat on our Eventbrite listing for the game jam.  The event is free, and meals are catered!  The theme will be announced at 5pm on Friday 23rd January (to accommodate Hawaii) so we recommend all participants to be in Farset before that time, or send word if you will be arriving later on. We look forward to seeing you all for this, as it should be a great weekend!

    What do I need?
There is no required skill level or barrier for entry; we welcome programmers, artists, musicians and anyone else who might be interested in being involved! Bring yourself and your equipment – the organisers recommend that participants wait until the beginning of the event to form teams.  We have found that this worked well in the past and gives interesting results.

More information will be provided in the run-up, but please feel free to contact events@farsetlabs.org.uk or ask us questions via Facebook or Twitter with the #GGJ15 tag.

    What is Global Game Jam?
Global Game Jam is essentially a hackathon, focused on games of all sorts, from full-scale console productions to mobile, web-based and embedded games, as well as non-digital productions like board and card games. Some will be frivolous, others developed for solid causes, such as social impact in the case of the Games For Change movement.  There are already a number of large sponsors involved in this year’s global event, including Facebook, Unity and Github.

The first Global Game Jam ran in 2009, and this year there are already over 480 individual Jam sites registered around the world. We will be live streaming video from sites all over during the 48hr event. There will also be an opportunity to see and play other teams’ games at the end of the event. The details of the venue are also available on our Global Game Jam listing.
